Tastemakers — be better than the feed

Interesting ideas, designs and inspiration often comes from exploration outside your own personalised feeds, industries and areas of expertise.

This is the main idea behind our new series we’re calling “Tastemakers” where we will work with tastemakers, creatives, creators and other select influencers who aren’t jewellery designers, but have an interesting viewpoint, a good eye and importantly the ever-hard-to-define ‘good taste’

If you’ve ever searched for engagement ring inspiration on any of your feeds, you know who Kira Kirby is. She’s the chic and sunny creator based in the US who has blessed our FYPs by curating interesting, design-led jewellery from brands and designers around the world.

She is the creator in the engagement and fine jewellery space, fashion forward, intelligent and simply has impeccable taste — the perfect person to launch our series with.

Phase 1 - Design

First thing was to establish a brief. Because this wasn’t an engagement ring, Kira’s brief was more focused on features she liked and the general vibe. This is the brief we finalised together

The Brief:

• The feature stone to be a pink diamond

• Feature stone to be a hybrid between a Marquise and Oval shape

• Delicate and dainty feel

• Strong enough to wear daily without fuss

• Exploration of single and multi-stone designs

• Loves micropavé

• Could black be an accent?

Based on these, Izzy our Head Designer, created these initial concepts

The first concept was an immediate favourite for Kira. From here we moved to a more developed design.

Developed Designs

3D CAD renders were developed, as part of our process.

Kira loved the renders, and as a final step we 3D printed it and sent it over to her to try on to get a sense of scale and proportion. Once approved, we moved to Phase 2 which was stone sourcing.

There were two key things we needed for the diamond

1. The colour was to be a soft pink

2. The shape was to be a hybrid of Marquise and Oval (known as a movals)

Both are individually uncommon and together does not exist off the shelf. So we custom grew and cut the diamond specifically for her.

One thing about coloured diamonds in elongated shapes is that standard cutting practices will result in a very undesireable bow-tie in the middle of the stone. This is exaggerated by the extra elongation of a moval. To get around this, we asked our diamond cutters to apply a modified cut method where additional facets are added to completely remove the presence of a bow tie, to create a uniform colour throughout the stone.

This process took around 8 weeks to get right. Once the diamond was right and we were all happy with it, we started Phase 3 which was production.
